OSWEGO, N.Y. -  Rebecca Vilchez of the softball team has been named the Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending on April 29. Earning her third award in this category during the spring semester, Vilchez pitched a total of 25 innings for the Lakers while only allowing a single earned run throughout the week.

    Starting game one of a doubleheader on the mound against Alfred University while only allowing two hits, Vilchez also connected in the box on an 1-0 count to send one over the fence. Her second home run of the year accounted for the only run scored by either team in the contest as Oswego won 1-0.

    With the Lakers splitting the series 1-1 against Fredonia on Friday afternoon, the sophomore went 2-3 from the plate while scoring three runs during a 4-1 victory in game one. Vilchez turned around from her four inning, one-hit start on the mound in game one and pitched all six innings in game two.

    The Franklin Square, N.Y. native also powered Oswego to a series sweep on Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y. against the Bengals of Buffalo State. As Vilchez went 3-4 from the batter’s box, scoring four runs, she also tossed 7.2 innings allowing only one earned run and adding five strikeouts. In the final game of the weekend, Vilchez scored what would eventually be the winning run coming home from third on a throw to first base after a dropped third strike, allowing Oswego to go on to win 3-2.

    With the strong finish to the regular season, Vilchez and the Lakers qualify for the SUNYAC Championship as the fourth seed and play No. 3 Oneonta at 1 p.m. on Thursday in Geneseo, N.Y.
