With a career record of 408-142-36 (.718 winning percentage) entering the 2025–26 season, Ed Gosek stands as the all-time winningest coach in Oswego State men’s ice hockey history. Over two decades at the helm, Gosek has built on the Lakers’ tradition of excellence, elevating the program into one of the nation’s premier NCAA Division III hockey powers.
Gosek was named head coach prior to the 2003–04 season, following 13 years as an assistant on the Lakers’ bench. In just his fourth season as head coach, he guided Oswego to its first-ever NCAA team national championship, defeating Middlebury in overtime to capture the 2007 NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey National Title. For his efforts, Gosek was honored with the AHCA Ed Jeremiah National Coach of the Year Award.
Since that historic championship, Gosek has consistently kept Oswego among the nation’s elite. From 2009–2019, his teams earned eight NCAA Tournament appearances and made five consecutive Frozen Four trips, a testament to the program’s sustained excellence under his leadership. In all, Gosek has guided the Lakers to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, four SUNYAC championships, and 13 SUNYAC title game berths. He has been recognized as SUNYAC Coach of the Year three times (2005, 2010, 2019).
The 2024–25 season added another chapter to his legacy, as the Lakers captured the SUNYAC Championship by defeating rival Plattsburgh, securing yet another NCAA Tournament berth.Â
Throughout his career, Gosek has mentored dozens of players who have gone on to achieve individual honors including 29 All-American selections, 1 AHCA National Player of the Year, 7 SUNYAC Player of the Year, 5 Defensive Player of the Year, 6 Rookie of the Year, and numerous All-Conference accolades.
Gosek’s influence extends far beyond the college game. He began his coaching career in the Oswego Minor Hockey Association, where he led youth teams to four New York State titles. His tireless dedication to grassroots development earned him the NYSAHA Peter Rush Award (2008) for contributions to youth hockey and the prestigious USA Hockey Walter Yaciuk Award (2009) for outstanding service to the Coaching Education Program. For more than 30 years, Gosek has been a dedicated contributor to USA Hockey, playing a key role at numerous national select festivals in St. Cloud, Minn., Rochester, N.Y., and Buffalo, N.Y. In addition, he has helped host the New York State 14U Development Camp on the Oswego campus for over 15 years, helping to develop and mentor the next generation of elite players.
A former Laker himself, Gosek played for Oswego State from 1979–83, later earning both his Bachelor of Science (1983) and Master of Science in Education (2001) from the university. A lifelong resident of Oswego, N.Y., he takes pride in representing his hometown community while leading one of college hockey’s most respected programs. He is the proud father of Jeremy and Sarah.
