Oswego State's upset bid falls short against Oneonta

In a tight dual meet throughout, visiting Oneonta came away with wins in the final two weight classed preventing the Oswego State wrestling team from scoring an upset of the 30th-ranked Red Dragons on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Laker Hall. The Lakers led by three points with two weight classes remaining, but Oneonta claimed wins in each of those bouts to come away with a 24-17 victory.

The loss put Oswego State at 5-6 in dual meet competition, while the Red Dragons improved to 11-3.
Trailing 14-8, the Lakers cut into the Oneonta lead as Walter Sosnowski (Massapequa) edged Scott Gorman (Seaford) 5-3 at 125 pounds before local product Josh LeVea (Fulton), competing at 133 pounds, needed 2:34 to pin Josh Coumo (Duanesburg). The win was LeVea's 19th of the season and put the hosts in front by a score of 17-14.

Oneonta bounced back at 141 pounds as Bryan Coyle (Elmira) scored an 8-0 decision over Gabe Young (Bronx) giving the lead back to the Red Dragons at 18-17. Rory Tobias (Binghamton) sealed the win for the visitors as he pinned Martino Barletta (Syracuse) in 2:00 at 149 pounds making the final 24-17.

The meet started at 157 pounds with Red Dragon standout Dustin Winn (Bainbridge) earning a 14-2 decision against Oswego State's Jarret Mills (Boonville). Winn is ranked seventh at that weight in the latest Brute - Adidas Division III poll.

The Lakers countered at 165 pounds as senior co-captain Frank Petrucci (Montebello) won a 14-4 decision to improve his individual record to 25-5. Petrucci is also ranked in his weight class settling in the eighth spot.

The teams again traded wins with Oneonta's Kyle Hauptfleisch (Franklin) winning 12-3 at 174 pounds and then Jon Jagatnarian (Bronx) racking up his 21st win of the season with a 17-6 decision at 184.

Oneonta then won the 197 and 285 pound weight classes to jump out to a 14-8 lead setting up the fast finish.
