The Oswego State wrestling team, ranked 28th nationally, defeated host RIT 33-10 on Wednesday night. The Lakers improved to 1-0 on the year while RIT fell to 0-1.
Junior Walter Sosonowski (Massapequa) put Oswego State on the board first as he won by a 7-2 decision over Teddy Furutani at 125 pounds. Joe Jewett (Watertown/Indian River) followed that up with a fall over Julian Nicholas (Cortland) in 2:58 to put the Lakers in front 9-0. Fulton native Josh LeVea (Fulton/G. Ray Bodly) lost 7-3 at 141 pounds to cut the Laker lead to 9-3.
Dane LaPalante (Carthage/Beaver River) recorded a pin in 2:03 at 149 pounds to increase the Oswego State lead to 15-3. RIT would close the gap to 15-6 as Nate Bachman won by decision over Martino Barletta (Syracuse/Fowler) at 157 pounds by the score of 13-7.
The Lakers then reeled off three straight wins to put the match away. Freshman Josh Stenglein (Albany/Colonie) got things started as he won by the score of 6-4 at 165 pounds. Chuck Guttilla (Huntington) followed that up with a thrilling 9-7 double overtime victory at 174 while Jonathon Jagatnarain (Bronx/Truman) received a forfeit at 184 pounds.
The two teams split the final two matches as RIT's Zach Greenburg won by major decision over Matt Gough (Penfield) 8-0. Laker sophomore Jake Taylor (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) completed the scoring with a pin in 1:22 at 285 pounds.
Oswego State will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19, as they will travel to Springfield College for the 16th annual Doug Parker Invitational.
