The Oswego State wrestling team, ranked 15th nationally, came away with a 2-1-1 record at the  Division III Budd Whitehill Challenge Duals at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.

The Lakers dropped their opening match to 17th-ranked Johnson and Wales University 25-16.  Oswego State then defeated Messiah College 21-18 and Baldwin Wallace College 30-16 in the consolation bracket. The Lakers were eliminated from the competition as they lost on criteria in a 21-21 tie with 16th-ranked Springfield College.

In the Lakers' first match, freshman Joe Jewett (Indian River/ Watertown) put Oswego State in front 5-3 with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Collin Goldsmith at 133 pounds. JWU regained the lead with a 7-2 decision at 141 before junior Dane LaPlante (Carthage/Beaver River) earned a 14-5 major decision at 149 to put the Lakers ahead 9-6.

JWU won the next three weights to take a 22-9 lead before Laker senior Jon Jagatnarain (Truman/Bronx) cut the lead to 22-12 with a 10-4 decision at 184. Laker Matt Gough (Penfield/Penfield) followed that up with an 8-0 major decision at 197 to close within six but Oswego heavyweight Jake Taylor dropped a 9-6 decision to end the match.

Oswego State then defeated Messiah College 21-18. Laker lightweight John Spinner opened the match by winning a fall at 125 pounds in 1:15. Jewett followed that up with a 9-5 decision at 133 to give Oswego a 9-0 lead. LaPlante earned a 9-4 decision at 149 to put Oswego ahead 12-3.

After Messiah won the next three weights, Jagatnarain tied the score at 15-15 with a 9-3 decision at 184. Messiah retook the lead with a 6-3 decision at 197 before Taylor secured the win for the Lakers with a fall in 1:47 at heavyweight.

In the 30-17 win over Baldwin Wallace, the Lakers jumped out to a 20-0 lead. Spinner opened the meet with a 17-1 technical fall victory at 125. Jewett earned a fall in just 34 seconds at 133 while freshman Phil Gordon (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) won an 8-1 decision at 141.

LaPlante revenged his only loss of the season as he earned a pin in 6:42 over Muhamed Salem at 149.  Jagatnarain earned a major decision at 184 and Gough closed out the Lake scoring with a pin at 197.

In the final match of the tournament, the Lakers battled to a 21-21 tie with Springfield. Once again the Lakers took an early lead as Spinner won by injury default at 125 and Jewett earned a fall in 1:33 at 133. Springfield earned two major decisions at 141 and 149 to cut the lead to 12-8.  LaPlante moved up a weight and came away with a 4-1 decision at 157 to put the Lakers in front 15-8.

Springfield won the next four weights as Bill Koch defeated Laker Chuck Guttilla (Hunitington/Huntington) 9-8 at 165 and Scott Faivre earned a major decision at 174 over Craig Becker (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse), 12-4. Andre Lee defeated Jagatnarain 3-2 at 184 and Gough dropped a double-overtime decision to Jason Leckey 3-2 at 197 to give Springfield the lead 21-15.

Taylor received a forfeit at heavyweight to end the match at 21-21 but Springfield advanced in the bracket based on criteria to break the tie.

The Lakers are now 5-3-1 in dual-meet competition. Oswego State will return to action next weekend as they will host the 37th annual New York State Collegiate Championships Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20 and 21, at Laker Hall's Max Ziel Gymnasium.
