Cortland defeats Oswego State in three games

Senior middle hitter Alice Kahrs and sophomore outside hitter Michelle Gaufman each recorded 11 kills as Cortland swept Oswego, 3-0, in a non-league dual-match on Wednesday in Cortland. The Red Dragons won by scores of 30-19, 30-21, 30-20 and are now 27-8 on the season. Oswego State is 14-20.

Oswego State freshman Kim Hayes finished the match with 11 kills and nine digs. Senior setter Amanda McManus registered 25 assists, seven kills and five digs, senior Heidi Armstrong added seven kills and junior libero Amanda Cipriano tallied 16 digs.

Cortland used a 5-0 run to break an early 3-3 tie in the first game. Oswego State closed back to within 12-11 on a Cipriano ace and was still within a point at 13-12 before Cortland scored four straight. The game remained tight at 21-17, but a Kahrs kill, a Jessica Bonczar (Eden) aces, a Chatman kill and an Oswego error gave the Red Dragons a 25-17 advantage and the lead was at least seven the rest of the way.

Cortland never trailed in the second game, racing out to a 13-3 lead. The closest the Lakers got from that point on was at 26-20 after a Red Dragon attack error, but Cortland finished the game on a 4-1 run. Two kills by Alyssa Brock helped Oswego State take an early 5-1 lead in the third game. Cortland responded with an 8-1 run, however, and never trailed again. Leading 12-11, Cortland scored nine of the next 10 points, including two aces and a kill by Muka. The lead was at least six from that point on.
