Lakers earn tie against 18th-ranked Brockport

The Oswego State wrestling team made its home debut on Wednesday, hosting nationally-ranked Brockport in a dual meet featuring Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference foes, with the final score ending tied 21-21 at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego.

Brockport, ranked 18th in the latest Brute/adidas NWCA Poll, took a 10-0 lead with a forfeit win at 125 pounds and an 11-0 major decision victory by Glen DiStefano over Brandon Huckle at 133 pounds.

The most exciting bout of the night featured six reversals and four near falls, and Oswego State's Derrick Smith scored a 16-13 decision over Josh Bellinger of Brockport at 141 pounds. Smith trailed 7-0 in the first period but scored a reversal and near fall points to narrow his deficit to just two points entering the second period. The wrestlers scored three reversals in the second period, two by Smith, to even the score 9-9 entering the final period. Bellinger earned an escape point to regain the lead, Smith followed with a takedown, but Bellinger answered with a reversal. Another reversal by Smith in the final minute and three near fall points gave the Laker junior the decision.

Brockport's Jake Bohn scored a 14-4 major decision over Mike Howard at 149 pounds and Oswego State's Marc Collins earned a 3-2 win over Mike Cole at 157 with a third-period escape and takedown.

At 165 pounds, Brockport's Shaheim Bradshaw, ranked fourth nationally in the weight class, earned an 11-2 major decision over Laker freshman Cam Mills to give Brockport an 18-6 lead in the team scoring.

The Lakers won two of the next three bouts. Craig Becker earned a win by decision at 174 and Ron Williams won by forfeit at 197. In between, James Flaherty earned a 3-1 decision victory over Oswego State's Tom Lester.

Oswego State trailed by six entering the final bout of the meet, but heavyweight Jake Taylor came through with a pin of Jabril Patterson to tie the meet at 21-21. Taylor scored an early takedown, turned Patterson to his back, and earned the fall at 1:46. It was Taylor's team-leading 22nd win of the season and 20th pin of the season, as the senior from Rochester leads the NCAA in all divisions with 20 wins by fall.

The Lakers will return to dual action on Saturday at Oneonta, and will host Cortland next Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m.
