The Oswego State wrestling registered falls in five of its six match wins en route to a 33-13 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology in an Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference dual match at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Saturday, November 15.
Both teams opened with decisions in the opening two weight classes as Oswego freshman Scott McGregor (Tonawanda) registered a 5-0 decision over RIT sophomore Paul Burrington (Barre, VT/Spaulding). Junior Mike McInally (Bergen//Byron-Bergen) of RIT followed with a 13-3 major decision over Laker freshman Paul Slaver to give the Tigers its first and only lead of the day at 4-3.
Oswego registered falls in three of the next five weight classes to jump out to a 21-10 lead. Senior captain Derrick Smith (Mexico, NY) pinned sophomore Adam Huginine (Rochester/Penfield) of RIT at 1:46 in the 141-pound weight class, while sophomore Mark Collins (Farmington/Victor) pinned Evan Williams (Decatur, GA/Dunwoody) in 2:14 at 157 pounds, and classmate Cam Mills (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) registered a fall in 2:54 over Zach Feador (North Olmstead, OH) at 174 pounds.
RIT got decisions from senior Luke Baum (Ontario/Wayne Central), registering a 6-2 decision over Brandon Heffernan (Martville/Cato-Meridian) at 149 pounds, and junior Jason Wake (Delhi/Delaware Academy), posting a 7-0 decision over Ethan Johnson (Jermyn/Lackawanna Trail) at 165 pounds.
The Tigers pulled to within eight points (21-13) after senior Nick Ryan pulled out a 4-3 win at 184 pounds over Oswego's Tom Lester (Amherst), but the Lakers closed out the match with back-to-back falls in the last two weight classes. Sophomore Joel Ford (Sterling) recorded a fall at 4:21 over Stephan Avorkliya (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg) at 197 pounds, while junior Eric Leusch (Rochester/Irondequoit) pinned RIT junior Scott Morrison (Plainview/Bethpage) in 3:25 at 285 pounds.
The Lakers travel to New England on Saturday, Nov. 22 to take part in the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
