For the second consecutive weekend, the Oswego State volleyball team came away from tournament play at .500, winning two of four matches at the Union College Invitational in Schenectady, NY on Friday and Saturday, September 12-13.
The Lakers (5-8) opened day one of competition with a four-set victory over Utica College (22-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-21), before suffering a three-set loss (25-7, 25-12, 25-24) to Skidmore College. Freshman Jessica Isgro (Brockport) tallied 13 kills, a pair of aces, and six digs in the Utica victory, while senior Amanda Cipriano (Solvay) registered 15 digs and served for a match-high six aces. Freshman Margaret Thorpe (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) added nine kills, while freshman setter Katie VanKessel (Milbrook) dished out 27 assists to go with 11 digs, three kills, and an ace.
Against Skidmore, Isgro and senior Beth Widzinski (Amherst/Williamsville North) provided the only offense for Oswego, registering six and five kills, respectively. Widzinski and Cipriano each tallied 13 digs, while freshman Thresa Myers (Bridgeport/Canastota) tallied four blocks (two solo).
Oswego opened the second day of play with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-22 triumph of Hartwick College. The Lakers tallied 15 service aces for the match, with Cipriano accounting for six of them. She also recorded 11 kills, a .360 hitting percentage, and 15 digs. Widzinski served for four aces and tallied a match-high 22 digs, while Thorpe compiled six kills. The team finished the weekend with a three-set defeat to Russell Sage College as Isgro totaled eight kills, while Cipriano (16 digs) and junior Alyssa Brock (Pine Bush) tallied seven kills each.
Cipriano finished the weekend with 24 kills, 59 digs, and 14 aces in garnering All-Tournament Team honors for the second straight week. Isgro totaled 31 kills, 36 digs, and seven aces for four matches, while Thorpe compiled 19 kills, VanKessel handed out 82 assists, and Widzinski compiled 65 digs and six aces.
The Lakers will play its second home match in Lee Hall (due to floor refinishing in Max Ziel Gymnasium) when they face St. John Fisher College for a 7:00 p.m. matchup, then will host the opening round of SUNYAC West Division pool play from Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 18-20 in Ziel Gym.
