The Oswego State women's tennis team took three of six singles matches, but visiting SUNY Plattsburgh won two of three in doubles to come away with a 5-4 victory in SUNYAC competition on Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Onondaga Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals (1-5 overall and SUNYAC) opened by taking two of three doubles matches, posting an 8-1 win at first singles, and an 8-6 triumph at second singles. The Lakers prevented the sweep by taking third singles, with the senior duo of Sara Gotlib (New City/Clarkstown South) and Heather Lucarelli (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) registering an 8-7 win.
Oswego (1-3 overall, 0-2 SUNYAC) took a one point edge after first singles, when junior Tiarra Garrow (Morrisonville/National Sports Academy), a transfer from Plattsburgh, won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, to improve to 4-0 on the season. However Plattsburgh ran off straight-set triumphs at second, third, and sixth singles to secure the team victory. The Lakers posted straight-set wins in the final two matches of the day, as Gotlib registered a 6-1, 6-3 win at fourth singles, and senior Sarajean Marhone (Hollis/Bayside) posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory at fifth singles to stay perfect on the season with a 4-0 mark.
Oswego takes to the road on Saturday, Sept. 20 for a 1:00 p.m. SUNYAC match at SUNY Fredonia before returning home on Tuesday, Sept. 23 for a match with SUNY Cortland at 3:00 p.m. at the Onondaga Tennis Courts.
