Laker grapplers finish dual schedule 2-1 at Scranton quadrangular

  The Oswego State wrestling capped off its 2008-09 dual meet schedule at the University of Scranton quadrangular, coming away with a 22-14 win over The Apprentice School of Newport News, Va., and a 44-9 victory over host Scranton before dropping a 29-10 decision to 18th-ranked College of New Jersey to finish the season with a 5-10 record.

Freshman 125 pounder Scott McGregor (Tonawanda) and senior captain and 141 pounder Derrick Smith (Mexico) each finished 3-0 on the weekend for the Lakers. McGregor opened with a fall at 4:35 over Paul Branch of Apprentice and scored a 4-2 decision over Paul Franke of TCNJ before receiving a forfeit in the Scranton match. McGregor, who has won six of his last seven dual matches, improved to 16-15 on the season with the weekend sweep.

Smith registered a pair of decisions and a fall to improve his season record to 31-6 on the year, opening with a 9-7 decision over Tywana Holley of Apprentice and a 13-4 major decision over Bill Tenpenney of TCNJ before scoring a fall in 2:22 over James Roth of Scranton.

Senior Craig Becker (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) and freshman Ethan Phillips (Sodus) each posted 2-1 records on the day. Becker scored a 5-4 decision at 174 pounds over Charles Mills of Apprentice and moved up to 184 pounds against Scranton, defeating Luke Genovese by a 17-3 major decision.  Phillips registered an 11-0 decision at 184 pounds over James Lipford of Apprentice and moved to 197 pounds to post a fall in 1:18 over Scranton's Joe Williams.

Oswego will use the idle week  in preparation for the upcoming Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships and national qualifier, hosted by the Lakers at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m.
