Cortland Too Much In Wrestling's 25-12 Loss

Marc Collins
The visiting Cortland Red Dragons won three of the final four matches to pull away for a 25-12 win over the Oswego State wrestling team on Wednesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers received their wins from Omar Santiago (Fr., Huntington, N.Y.) at 133 pounds, Marc Collins (Jr., Farmington, N.Y.) at 165 pounds, and Ethan Phillips (So., Sodus, N.Y.) at 184 pounds. Oswego State, which fell to 3-9 in dual meet competition, will host The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 12 p.m., while Cortland, which moved to 15-3, will face Stevens Institute on the same day at 10 a.m.

Sean Kempf started the night for the Red Dragons with a near pin in the first period of the 125-pound match, but posted a 14-2 major decision over Paul Slaver (So., Fulton, N.Y.).  The Lakers took a 6-4 lead after Santiago won at 133 pounds due to a forfeit.  Cortland won the next two matches as Mike Pagano edged Chris Payne (So., Farmington, N.Y.), 4-1, at 141 pounds, and John Cataldo defeated Mike Howard (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.), 5-2, at 149 pounds.

The most exciting match of the night took place in the 157-pound weight class between the Red Dragons' Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Oswego State's Nick Rodgers (Jr., Owego, N.Y.).  Mahoney held a slim 4-3 lead in the third period, but Rodgers registered a take-down with eight seconds remaining to grab a 5-4 advantage.  However, Mahoney received a point courtesy of riding time to force the match into overtime, where he prevailed 7-5 after a takedown to put Cortland ahead 13-6.

The Lakers responded in the next match as Marc Collins defeated Will Brodfuehrer 5-3 at 165 pounds.  However, Mike Ciaburri posted a 16-0 tech. fall over Gage Banker (So., Fairport, N.Y.) to build the Red Dragon lead to 18-9.  Oswego State was not finished as Ethan Phillips raced out to an 8-1 lead after the first period of the 184-pound match.  Phillips held off a late charge from Jared Myhrberg for a 9-7 victory.

Cortland recorded wins in the final two matches by scores of 12-4 and 6-0 at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, to make the final score 25-12.
