Bryan Pacchiana (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the season for the Oswego State men's soccer team in the 57th minute to give the Lakers a 1-0 triumph over Sage Colleges on Friday afternoon at Laker Field in the first-ever Oswego State Men's Soccer Tournament.
A turnover by Gator freshman goalkeeper Carmen Volpe was taken by Oswego State junior
Max Guliani (New York, N.Y.), who was then fouled just outside of the penatly box. Senior
German Collazo (Freeport, N.Y.) sent a pass across the box on the free kick to Pacchiana, who put a shot on net that trickled through the hands of Volpe.
The game marked the first in program history for Sage. The Gators' roster currently has 26 players, 22 of which are freshmen. Sage started off the game with confidence by playing a ball over the top of the Oswego State defenders and getting of an early shot on goal. The game would continue to go back and forth for most of the first half.
The Lakers started to control the tempo late in the first half and early in the second, leading up to the Pacchiana goal. Swirling winds highlighted the second half, as both teams struggled to maintain possession.
Sage's best chance to tie came when Chris Giustina beat a couple Oswego State defenders and struck a shot that Laker goalie
Matt Wopperer (Sr., Manlius, N.Y.) anticipated and knocked away. Wopperer finished the game with four saves in a shutout win. Volpe recorded four saves in the contest.
The Lakers, now 1-1 on the year, will be facing Alfred in the tournament final at 3 p.m. The Gators (0-1) will play Grove City in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
