The Oswego State men's soccer team was unable to capture the championship at its inaugural tournament as it lost to Alfred University 2-1 at Laker Field on Saturday afternoon. Both Saxon goals were scored by Frankie Mannino, as Alfred moved to 1-1-1 on the year, while the loss dropped the Lakers to 1-2.
Sporadic rain and blustery wind gave both teams trouble throughout the game, but Saxon sophomore Frankie Mannino came through for Alfred as he was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. His first goal came 22:39 into the game when he put a strong header on a corner kick from fellow sophomore Tony Gai that got over Laker goalkeeper
Matt Wopperer (Manilus, N.Y.). The ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and dropped into the goal.
Oswego State senior
Dean Gaetano (Mechanicville, N.Y.) capitalized on a chance just a minute later. He received a pass from a
Brandon Carnovale (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) free kick and blasted a shot into the left side of the net past Alfred goalkeeper Elliot Thorpe to knot the game at one. The goal was redemption for Gaetano, who had a hard shot soar just high earlier in the contest.
Both teams went back and forth with no real chances on goal until Saxon Jeff Thomas made a great run down the left side of the field and split two Laker players with a pass to Zach Kranefeld. Kranefeld then fed Mannino, who slowed down to pull Wopperer out of net before striking the ball into the open goal.
The Lakers had few chances late in the game with their best coming from a shot by Carnovale that went wide right with three minutes left. Oswego State outshot its opponents 10-2, but Alfred made both shots count by scoring.
Oswego State has a five-day break before it travels to Rochester to face Nazareth on Friday, Sept. 10.
