The Oswego State wrestling team established an 18-6 lead heading into the final four matches of the day, but Oneonta came away with two pins and a major decision to hand the Lakers a 22-21 loss on Saturday afternoon at Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego State fell to 4-7 in dual competition this season, while the Red Dragons moved to 10-5-1.
Michael Gentilcore got the Lakers started in the right direction at 125 pounds when he pinned David Bailen with 36 seconds remaining in the bout. At 133 pounds, Scott McGregor staged a come-from-behind victory against Ben Mikac in a 3-2 decision. Both grapplers were knotted at 0-0 heading into the third period when Mikac chose bottom to start the stanza. He recorded a reversal with 39 seconds, but McGregor tied the match seconds before the buzzer sounded to send the bout into overtime. McGregor scored a takedown with fractions of a second left in overtime to come away with the win.
Oswego State took a 12-0 lead when Chris Payne was able to record a takedown in the final minute to post a 5-4 win over Michael Gregg at 141 pounds. Oneonta cut the deficit in half with a pin by David Broughton at 149 pounds, but the Lakers countered with victories by Nick Rodgers and Marc Collins to go ahead 18-6 heading into the last four matches.
The Red Dragons started with a major decision at 174 pounds by Frankie Provenzano followed by first-period pins from Brian Kramer and Derek Wignall to give Oneonta a 22-18 lead going into the last match. Joe Pesce made a furious attempt to post a major decision at 285 pounds, as he tallied six points in the third period. However, he defeated Stephen Provenzano, 8-2, for the three-point win, as the Red Dragons held on for the 22-21 win.
The match served as senior day for the Lakers, as the team recognized its three seniors, Collins, Nick Massaro, and Payne in the final home meet of the season. Oswego State will next travel to Morrisville to face the Mustangs on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
