The Oswego State volleyball team avenged an earlier season loss to Morrisville on Tuesday with a 3-2 win (25-11, 25-18, 23-25, 24-26, 15-9) at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers close out the 2011 season at 7-22 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 4-22 on the season.
Oswego State controlled the net throughout the match as middle blockers
Stephanie Bailey (Fr., Scotia, N.Y.) and
Meaghan Puff (So., Newfane, N.Y.) put away 17 and 13 kills, respectively, and recording two solo blocks each.
Setter
Kara Michelsen (Fr., Lake View, N.Y.) helped the Lakers get out to a quick 7-1 start due in part to three kills from Bailey and a kill from
Lauren Weaver (Fr., Schoharie, N.Y.). Morrisville pulled to within four points later in the set, but Oswego State put together a 6-0 run courtesy of a pair of
Katie Kietzmann (So., Amsterdam, N.Y.) service aces and multiple Mustang hitting errors to cruise to a first-set win.
In the second set, Morrisville was the team to get out an early lead, 6-1, but the Lakers gradually chipped away at the deficit until rattling off five straight points to grab a 16-11 advantage. The Mustangs drew no closer than four points the rest of the set, as Oswego State took a two-set lead.
The Lakers appeared to be headed to a sweep at 22-18 in the third set, but Morrisville fought back by winning the next five points. The Mustangs completed the comeback when Meghan Robinson's tip found the floor to force a fourth set.
Morrisville was poised to easily win the next set holding a 19-11 lead, but Puff led the Laker charge with both of her solo blocks over the next seven points and
Samantha Manicone (Fr., Copiague, N.Y.) added two service aces to make the score 19-18. The set went back-and-forth until Tiffany Jones-Maxwell registered one of her team-high 15 kills and a solo block at 26-24 to force the match into a fifth and decisive set.
Oswego State created an early 8-3 gap with kills from four different players, including three from Bailey, and never looked back to close out the season with a victory.
Defensively, the Lakers were paced by Manicone, who tallied 19 digs, followed by 16 from
Christina Anderson (Fr., Huntington Station, N.Y.). Puff ended the match with a double-double as she added 11 digs, while
Kara Michelsen finished with 44 assists to go along with seven digs.
Jones-Maxwell was the only Morrisville player to reach double-figures in kills with 15, and added nine digs. Meghan Robinson recorded a double-double of her own with 22 assists and 24 digs.
