Softball Drops Two Games To Close Out Spring Break Trip

Washington Univ. Box Score
Westfield State Box Score

The Oswego State softball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday, as the Lakers closed out their Spring Break trip with a 16-2 loss to Washington University-St. Louis and a 6-5 loss to Westfield State in Clermont, Florida.  Oswego State returns to New York with an overall record of 4-5, and returns to the diamond Friday, April 1 for the start of SUNYAC play against New Paltz in Oswego.  The doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.

The Lakers found themselves trailing 11-0 after three innings to 2010 NCAA Regional qualifier Washington University-St. Louis before they were able to score in the bottom of the third when Laura Kahn stole home after Sammie Schroeter got caught stealing second.  Oswego State added another run in the fourth following an RBI-double by Dee Apps into center field to drive in Katie Russell.  However, the Bears ended the game after five innings by the score of 16-2.  Morgan Lavner suffered the loss, while Sarah Thayer came on to pitch in relief.

In the second game of the day, Dee Apps gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly that drove in Brittany Carbacio.  Westfield State answered in the second as Kerin DeGirolamo delivered a triple down the left field line with the bases loaded as part of a five-run frame.  After the Owls added another run in the third, Oswego State went into its final at-bat trailing 6-1.

The Lakers mounted a furious rally that was triggered by a lead-off Nicole Ouellette double.  Oswego State recorded just two hits, but took advantage of two defensive errors and two walks to score four runs to make the score 6-5.  The Lakers had runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to pick up the key hit, leaving both runners stranded to close out the game.  Jess Palmitesso went the distance in the circle striking out five, walking five, and giving up six earned runs on nine hits.
