Box Score

The Oswego State women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half behind defender Raquel Vescio's (So., Fulton, N.Y.) two-goal game in a 5-0 win over SUNYIT on Thursday afternoon at Laker Field.  With the win the Lakers improved to 5-1-0 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 2-4-0 with the loss.

Vescio scored twice in an eight-minute span during the second half to keep the Lakers unblemished against SUNYIT in the program's history. The victory over the Wildcats improves the Lakers career record against SUNYIT to 18-0-0.

Scoreless throughout the majority of the first half, midfielder Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) put the Lakers in front on a rebound goal in front of the SUNYIT net. With 2:42 remaining in the first half, forward Shelly Bateman (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) fired a shot on goal that was blocked aside by SUNYIT goalkeeper Aubrey Campbell. The rebound came out to Kleine in front, who put the ball into the open net for her fourth goal of the season.

Kleine nearly registered her second goal of the game early in the second half, but an offsides call by the referee nullified the scoring play. Bateman and Kleine had a 2-on-1 break in front of the goalkeeper, but Kleine was ruled offsides when Bateman made a cross-net pass to her on the far side of the goal.

The Lakers increased their lead to two following Bateman's fourth goal of the season at 61:41. Bateman's goal was set up by forward Nikki Liadka (So., Liverpool, N.Y.), who was taken out by Campbell in front of the net while in possession of the ball. Bateman collected the loose ball in front of the net and chipped it into the empty net.

Oswego State broke the game open in the final nine minutes of the game, tallying three goals before the end of the game. Vescio tallied her second goal of the game after taking a pass from midfielder Allegra Uva (So., Denver, Colo.) and placing it into the top left corner of the net just passed the outstretched hands of Campbell. Vescio's second goal ended Campbell's day in net for the Wildcats and was replaced by Margaret Werenczak.

Midfield Britt Williams (Sr., Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season in the final minute of the game. Williams' goal came with 56 seconds remaining in regulation and Vescio's second goal of the game came with just 34 seconds remaining.

The Lakers dominated possession, outshooting the Wildcats 37-2 and firing 26 shots on goal compared to SUNYIT's one. Oswego State tallied 19 shots in the first half and 18 shots in the second half. The Lakers held SUNYIT shotless in the second half. Oswego State also held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Oswego State goalkeeper Emily Varonier (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) recorded one save on one shot faced to earn the win in net for the Lakers. Campbell finished with 21 saves on 24 shots faced in a losing effort for the Wildcats. Werenczak allowed two goals on two shots faced.

The Lakers will host Cobleskill on Sunday, September 18 at 12 p.m. at Laker Field.
