The Oswego State volleyball team defeated the Sage Colleges in a tight four-set match by the scores of 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 on the final day of the Union Invitational in Schenectady. The Lakers posted losses to Skidmore, Union, and Utica by identical 3-0 scores earlier in the tournament to see their overall record move to 2-8.
On Friday, Oswego State started the tournament against Skidmore with a loss (13-25, 22-25, 15-25). Middle blocker
Stephanie Bailey (Fr., Scotia, N.Y.) paced the offense with 10 kills and also added three blocks.
Lauren Weaver (Fr., Schoharie, N.Y.) followed with six kills and Meghan Puff (So., Newfane, N.Y.) contributing three kills and four blocks. Defensively, Sam Manicone (Fr., Copiague, N.Y.) led the back row with seven digs followed by five each from
Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and
Katie Kietzmann (So., Amsterdam, N.Y.).
Kara Michelsen (Fr., Lake View, N.Y.) posted 12 assists in the loss.
The Lakers tried to turn things around against host Union, but came up short by the scores of 11-25, 14-25, 17-25. Weaver had a team-high six kills, while Bailey recorded seven blocks. Michelsen tallied nine assists with Manicone and Kietzmann registering seven digs apiece.
Oswego State got off to a sluggish start on Saturday morning as it fell to Utica (20-25, 15-25, 24-26). Michelsen handed out 23 assists with
Caitlin Wright (So., Lockport, N.Y.) posting nine kills.
Kim Grice (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) turned in six kills and four digs with Bailey putting away five kills and Manicone having five digs.
Bailey helped put the Lakers back in the win column against Sage when she recorded a season-high 14 kills. Michelsen turned in her first double-double after tallying 25 assists and 10 digs. Puff had a solid all-around effort for Oswego State as she had 25 digs, six kills, and four service aces. In addition, Manicone posted 16 digs and Grice filled up the stats page with 11 digs, six kills, and two service aces.
The Lakers will have another crack at Utica on Wednesday night in Utica before starting conference pool play next weekend at Buffalo State.
