AURORA, N.Y. – Strong serving helped the Oswego State volleyball team post a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) season-opening victory over Wells Friday night.
Sabrina Sutton (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) registered five of the Lakers' 13 service aces, while
Stephanie Bailey (So., Scotia, N.Y.) hit a blistering .500 percent in the middle to tally a team-high eight kills. Another key factor in the win was that Oswego State hit .136 as a team on 24 kills and 12 errors compared to the Express, which hit -.052 as a squad on 21 kills and 26 errors.
In addition to Bailey's eight kills,
Meaghan Puff (Jr., Newfane, N.Y.),
Morgan Lavner (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) and
Morgan Grimes (Sr., Cambridge, N.Y.) contributed three kills apiece.
Kara Michelsen (So., Lake View, N.Y.) dished out ten assists followed by six from
Brittany Jones (Sr., Lake George, N.Y.).
Defensively, the Lakers were paced by seven digs from Lavner and six from
Kelsey Ihle (Sr., Clarence, N.Y.) to along with six total team blocks.
Wells was led statistically by Zakarra Butts' eight kills, Taryn Heath's 16 assists, and 11 digs each from Gina Cairns and Katie Curtain.
The victory marked the first time since 2006 that the Lakers started the year with a victory.
Oswego State continues its season on Tuesday when it travels to Keuka College.
