Women’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season In 2-1 Decision

UTICA, N.Y. - Bailey Waterbury (Fr., Plattsburgh, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal, but it would be the only score for the Oswego State women's soccer team (2-1-0) in a 2-1 loss to Utica (4-0-0).

Less than five minutes into the game, the Pioneers opened the scoring on a corner kick by Samantha Matthews to Krystine Alvear. After the Utica goal, much of the first half was controlled by Oswego State, however, it was unable to even the contest.

For the first 15 minutes of the second half, the ball went back-and-forth between each of the teams with no additional scoring. The silence was broken when Samantha Spohler scored on a rebound from Matthews to put Utica up 2-0.

With 16:58 left to play, Waterbury put Oswego State on the board, scoring on a loose ball in front with an assist from Jill Keevil (Fr., Tully, N.Y.). Waterbury tried to tie the game with less than a minute left, but Utica goalkeeper Caitlyn Smith stopped the attempted Laker comeback for the most important save of her 11 total on the night. Oswego State outshot Utica 17-13, as Emily Varonier (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.) turned away nine shots in the losing effort.

The Lakers look to rebound from the loss when they host Hamilton Sunday at 2 p.m. at Laker Field.
