Volleyball Takes Another Five Set Win at Fisher

BOX SCORE

Pittsford, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team went the distance to sweep  the season series with St. John Fisher College by beating the host Cardinals 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 30-28, 10-25, 15-7) on Wednesday night. Oswego is now 5-1 in matches that go five sets while improving to 15-11.

Megan Russell extended her single-season block assists record by setting an indiviidual single-game block assist record, accumulating seven over the match. As a team, Oswego totaled 24 block assists, which is the second most by a Laker team in program history. The team's 15 wins is also the most by an Oswego squad since 2007.

The Lakers found a way to get the job done in the fifth set, cruising to a 15-7 win with the final point coming on a Lauren Edwards sneak set for a point. It was the second time Edwards used the move, taking advantage in the first set to the attention Fisher was paying to the Lakers' outside hitters.

In the first set, Oswego jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but Fisher clawed back in, knotting the score at 6-6. The Lakers lost the lead at 12-11 but playing from behind for the next several points, Oswego gritted out the 25-22 win. Emma Moriarty was huge in the opening set, with three explosive kills. Her first came between two Fisher players to cut the Cardinal margin to one.

The freshman later killed an attempt to tie the game at 20-20 before killing another to make it set point at 24-22. On the Lakers' 25th point, Moriarty made a great dig deep in the corner to set her team up for the win.

After losing the second set 27-25 in a highly even set, Oswego and Fisher gave it all in the third set with the Lakers prevailing 30-28.

Oswego fell behind 8-4 and was forced to take a timeout. The break proved to be just what the Lakers needed, as they went on a 13-2 run to take a 17-10 advantage. Fisher would not bow down, however, putting together a run of its own. Oswego withstood the Cardinals fury to take a 2-1 edge in the match.

In the marathon game, Emily Walser got in the action with huge solo block to make it 20-12. Sabrina Sutton smoked a ball down the line to make the score 28-27 on an Edwards' assist. Moriarty was solid throughout once again, taking a dig late while serving up her usual kills.

After the excitement of the third set, Oswego had no answer for the Cardinals in the fourth, as Fisher pushed the match to decisive fifth set with a 25-10 win.

Oswego will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts The Sage Colleges as part of a tri-match. After the two visiting schools play a match at 2 p.m., the Lakers will take on Alfred University at 4 p.m. It will also be the annual Dig Pink event.
