OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team won both of its matches at home on Saturday, defeating visiting Sage College in its first contest before taking down Alfred University. This tri-match was part of Dig Pink, where the Lakers and opposing schools all wore pink while raising money for Breast Cancer with raffles and other activities. With the two wins, Oswego improves to 17-11 on the season.
The first win also allowed Head Coach
J.J. O'Connell to capture his 300th-career win. O'Connell's win total is cumulative of his time at Oswego and previously at Stevens Institute of Technology.
MATCH ONE Oswego took on Sage in the first match of the day, taking down the Gators 25-20, 25-12 and 25-12.
Stephanie Bailey led the way with 10 kills while
Emma Moriarty was close behind with nine. Moriarty also had three digs along with a service ace.
Lauren Edwards had 17 assists while
Lindsey Champitto finished with 11. Champitto also had 11 digs, second only to teammate
Rachel Ruggaber, who finished with 16.
MATCH TWO The Lakers faced a different opponent in second contest but the result was the same as Oswego took the match in three-straight sets (25-14, 25-11, 25-18).
Edwards again led the team with 14 assists while contributing nine digs. Two of her teammates had more digs as
Megan Dignan finished with 16 and
Meaghan Puff collected 10.
Bailey stopped six Saxon attempts at the net for points while the team finished with 10 as a unit. The junior also had five kills as did freshman
Megan Russell. Leading the way in kills for the Lakers was
Kelsey Dillon, finishing with seven.
