OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 2 Oswego State men's ice hockey team opened the 50th anniversary weekend with a dominating 9-1 victory over visiting SUNY Canton on Friday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the win, the Lakers remain unbeaten on the season at 4-0-0 while the Kangaroos drop to 0-3-1.
Sean Federow helped kick off the anniversary celebration, scoring the first goal of the night, and the first of his career. In unassisted fashion, the sophomore juked his defender multiple times before ripping a shot past the Canton goalie. It was a fitting score with many ice hockey alumni back on campus as Federow's father Art played for Oswego with head coach
Ed Gosek in the early 1980s.
After Federow's goal at 5:55 in the first,
Stephen Johnson added the Lakers' second goal over the goalie's left shoulder after collecting his own blocked shot at 19:40.
Canton was able to get on the board early in the second but
Mitchell Herlihey answered with a goal just 18 seconds later on assists from
Matt Galati and
Alex Botten. Herlihey's tally was the first of seven unanswered Laker goals to end the game.
Six Oswego players finished with double digit points on the night, led by Galati and
Shawn Hulshof's three apiece. Galati had two goals and an assist on the night while Hulshof's three points all came on assists. Johnson (2 goals), Federow (1 goal, 1 assist), Botten (2 assists) and
Kenny Neil (1 goal, 1 assist) all ended the night with two points.
Justin Gilbert earned the start between the pipes and allowed just one goal on 15 saves in the outing.
Oswego's special teams were on point against the Kangaroos, scoring on three of its four power-plays while killing all three of Canton's extra-man opportunities.
The Lakers more than doubled Canton in shots (35-16) and won 13 more faceoff chances than their counterpart (35-22).
