RESULTSOSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State wrestling team fell 40-8 to No. 5 Cortland in Max Ziel Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Oswego honored its two seniors,
Maxx Stratton and
Dan Batchelder, before the dual as it was the Lakers final home match of the season. The loss drops Oswego to 3-9 on the year while Cortland improves to 12-3.
Quammine Thomas earned the Lakers first three team points at 133, grinding out a 6-4 decision. The two wrestlers needed extra time after the first three periods as they were deadlocked at 4-4. Thomas found the energy for a takedown just over 20 seconds into the first overtime period.
Abubakarr Sow dominated his opponent in the 149-weight class, cruising to a 15-0 technical fall at 4:13.
Scott Bova wrestled hard throughout his bout at 184, taking a tough 6-5 loss. Bova was just seven seconds short of being awarded a point for ride time. He also seemed to takedown his opponent for two points as time waned in the third period, but the official ruled that Cortland's wrestler was off the main mat, therefore out-of-bounds.
James Ronca started the day off at 125 with a good outing, leading his opponent by a few points throughout the first two periods. Ronca's ideas for a victory were spoiled midway through the third, as Cortland's Paul Fields found a way to win by pin at 5:44.
Oswego will return to action at the Wesleyan Quad at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 in Middletown, C.T.
