Field Hockey Loses Heartbreaking 2OT Game

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State field hockey team opened its SUNYAC portion of the schedule with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Brockport after two overtimes and three penalty shootout rounds. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Golden Eagles go to 2-6, 1-0.

After a scoreless second half and two overtime periods, Oswego and Brockport were sent to a shootout to determine a winner. Each team alternated shots and the best of a five-shot round would be the winner. Both teams were unable to score in the first two rounds but Courtney Collins changed that in the third.

Collins beat the keeper on a juke to her left, switched hands and put a made-attempt in the center of the goal. The senior captain's successful attempt came on Oswego's first shot in the third penalty round, following a Golden Eagle miss.

Margo Tremaine quickly responded with a successful attempt of her own in Brockport's very next try, knotting the round once again. In the final shot of the third round, the Golden Eagles' Nickole Morgan put a good attempt in net for the go-ahead goal, putting the pressure on the Lakers' final shooter. Danielle Cronk made a solid effort to beat the goalie but the keeper was able to kick the ball away before a shot was taken.

Brockport broke onto the scoreboard first with a goal at 25:43. Alyssa Mills received a pass from Nickole Moran at the left post and snuck it past Sarita Charap to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0. Oswego would answer right back, however, as Monica Harvey sent a pass to Grace Rinaldi who fired a shot by the Brockport goalie from the middle of the offensive zone. Rinaldi's goal came at 29:47 and tied the game at 1-1, which would remain the score right through to the penalty shootout.

The Lakers will try to even its conference mark in their next game at 4 p.m. on Friday as they travel SUNYAC-foe New Paltz's campus.
