OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team earns a victory in its season-opener, shutting out New England College 5-0 at the Marano Campus Center Arena on Friday night. The Lakers will go to 1-0-0 on the year and the Pilgrims drop to 0-1-0.
With neither team able to find the back of the net in the first, Oswego broke the tie just 44 seconds into the second.
Olivia Ellis made a nice move in front of the net and tried to jam the puck past the Pilgrim goaltender unsuccessfully.
Rachel Lenard was there to pick up the garbage though, ushering the puck into the seemingly empty net. Ellis found herself with another point on the night, notching the Lakers second goal of the period. The sophomore took a pass from
Alexa Aramburu in close to the net and proceeded to backhand it over the goalie's glove at the 11:55 mark. Oswego wasn't finished there as
Brianna Rice earned her first tally of the year 2:19 later. Rice received a pass from
Brianna McFall as she entered the zone, deked past her defender and beat New England's Lindsey Powers' five-hole.
Entering the third, the Lakers picked up right where they left off, scoring just 4:46 into the stanza. Ellis was able to find Appelbaum on the blue line for a clapper that bypassed the goalie, giving Oswego its first power-play goal of the year. Oswego nabbed its last goal as Rice took a pass in front of the crease from
Lizzy Marks and jammed it in on her second attempt.
Mariah Madrigal played all 60 minutes in net for the Lakers, stopping 17 shots and earning her first career shutout.
Oswego dominated almost every aspect of the game, leading the Pilgrims in shots (58-16) and faceoffs (39-17).
Women's ice hockey returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Castleton University for a non-conference bout.
