OSWEGO, N.Y. – The #10/11 Oswego State men's ice hockey team fell 5-4 to #4/5 Plattsburgh in an overtime contest at the Marano Campus Center Arena on Friday night. With the loss, Oswego drops to 1-2-1 in both the conference and overall. Plattsburgh remains undefeated, posting a 4-0-0 record (3-0-0 SUNYAC).
The Lakers got off to an extremely fast start, scoring two goals in the first 1:10.
Mitchell Herlihey got the ball rolling, as he forced a rebound off of a
Shawn Hulshof shot into the back of the net 44 seconds in. Just 26 seconds later,
Kenny Neil pushed the lead to two as he beat the Cardinals keeper of an
Alex D'Oliveira pass. After a Cardinal score midway through the period, Oswego thought it regained its two-goal lead when
Chris Waterstreet deflected a slapper from the blue line as the buzzer for first intermission sounded, but the referees congregated and eventuallly waived it off.
Plattsburgh would even it up 2:37 into the second, but the Lakers were able to shut out the period in strong fashion.
Alex Botten helped Oswego take back the lead, scoring top shelf off a set of tic-tac-toe passes from
Matt Galati and Neil with 4:30 left on the clock. Galati cashed in one of his own 3:02 later as a wide slapshot from
Sean Federow was picked up by Botten and fed to the Toronto, Ont. native in front of the net.
The Cardinals fought back though, scoring two in the third to push the game to overtime. There, Plattsburgh's Pat Egan was able to beat
Matt Zawadzki glove side to secure the win.
At the faceoff dot, the Lakers held the slight 37-33 edge over the Cardinals as both Botten (11) and
Andrew Barton (10) finished with double-digit wins.
Zawadzki finished the night with a total of 20 saves.
Men's ice hockey will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts Potsdam in the second game of Whiteout Weekend.
