CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team dropped a close 11-10 decision to Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon at Cazenovia College's Christakos Field. With the loss, the Lakers are now 2-2 on the year while the Golden Knights improve to 2-1.
Oswego opened the game with three-straight goals over a 6:50 span on scores from
Emily Lange,
Esther Gabriel and
Mackenzie Kjerstad. The Golden Knights outscored the Lakers 5-4 over the final 23:10, with Oswego owning a 7-5 advantage at halftime.
To start the second half, Oswego and Clarkson traded goals, with the Lakers' tally coming on a free-position from Kjerstad. Clarkson then strung together a pair of goals to even the game at 8-8 with 15:52 remaining.
Gemma O'Kane regained the Laker lead with 9:38 to go before Kjerstad extended it to a two-goal margin with 7:01 showing on the clock.
Clarkson then put together three-straight tallies of its own to take its first lead of the game with 2:18 left in the contest. The three-goal spurt came over a 4:43 period of time.
With just 16 seconds of action remaining,
Emily Lange gained possession for Oswego and drove the length of the field. The junior sprinted to the top and acting like a point guard, found a cutting
Briana Kimble. Kimble cut to the right post and fired a shot as time expired, but Clarkson's Danielle Tani made save to dash the Lakers' hopes for overtime.
Kjerstad finished with a team-high four goals while Lange and Gabriel each added two. Kimble had two assists in the effort, with Lange and
Lindsey Eggers distributing one helper each.
Angela Ponto had a great outing in net for the Lakers, making a career-high 14 saves in the loss.
Oswego will return to action at 11 a.m. on Sunday when it faces the Pride of Springfield College in Orlando, Fla. At Disney's Wide World of Sports Invitational.
