Lakers Beat Buffalo; Earn First SUNYAC Win

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team defeated Buffalo State 15-12 Tuesday evening on the road. With the win, the team improved to 5-8 on the season and also earned its first SUNYAC win (1-5). Buffalo State moves to 4-9 overall, 2-4 in the conference.

Oswego jumped out to an early lead as Esther Gabriel notched the game's first goal just 59 seconds in. The Bengals would control the next ten minutes, scoring three in the process. Gabriel would bring the skid to a halt as she scored off an Erannan Shattuck pass at the 17:11 mark. 42 seconds later, Briana Kimble would tally her first goal of the game, evening the score. The two teams traded goals in the next minutes before Buffalo State notched a couple to go ahead two with 14:02 left in the first.  The Lakers would go on an offensive tear at the 12 minute mark though, scoring four goals from four different players in a matter of eight minutes. Buffalo would close out the half with three straight, giving them a one goal lead going into the intermission.

Both offenses continued to press on in the second half, but it was Oswego's that would score the first three. The teams would go on to exchange goals back and forth for the remainder of the period but the Lakers kept the lead, giving the team its first in-conference victory.

Five women ended the game with multiple goals, led by Gabriel who notched four. Kimble and Emily Lange each had three for the Lakers and Lindsey Eggers and Gemma O'Kane came away with two. Also adding to the scoring was Mackenzie Kjerstad, who recorded her sole goal on a free-position shot.

Playing the role of facilitator this game was Shattuck who helped out on a five goals, tying her season high she put up earlier this year.

Angela Ponto played the entire game in net for the Green and Gold, making nine saves. The goalie also had a team-high four groundballs.

Women's lacrosse will honor its three seniors at 4 p.m. on Thursday as it hosts Elmira College for senior day.
