Lakers Battle in Second Game; Fall Short

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oswego State softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Cortland Friday afternoon on the road. With the games ending 6-0 and 13-7, respectively, the Lakers move to 3-15 overall and 1-11 in the SUNYAC. Cortland improves to 21-9 on the season, 10-2 in the conference.

GAME ONE – Cortland 6, Oswego 0:

Alexis Nasca had the Lakers' lone extra-base hit, nailing a double in the XX inning. Also finishing with one hit on the day were Melanie Klauser, Tori Trovato and Noelle White. Trovato and Dana Taglioni also worked walks in the outing.

In the circle, Lisa O'Callaghan took the loss in five innings of work, striking out four Red Dragons hitters. She scattered nine hits during the game, allowing six runs, only four of which were earned. Alexandria Connelly pitched the final inning for Oswego, facing just three batters, forcing each to fly out.

GAME TWO: Cortland 13, Oswego 7:

After allowing Cortland to score 10 runs in the first inning, Oswego was able to lock it in on defense and give themselves a chance at the comeback. The Lakers earned their first runs in the top of the third as Katie Heselden hit a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Gabriella Vertuccio then singled to the pitcher, moving Heselden to third. Melanie Klauser would throw down a sacrifice bunt that would give Oswego its first run. Later that inning, Melissa Mulvaney would single to bring in Vertuccio.

The Lakers picked up steam once again in the fifth. Erin McNeely singled into right and Melissa Siegfried was put in to pinch run. She was then pushed to second on a sac bunt laid down by Vertuccio, who would end up on first due to an error. Melanie Klauser recorded the teams only extra-base hit as she knocked a double into right field, advancing Vertuccio to third and scoring Siegfried. Next at the plate was Mulvaney who singled into right field, scoring both runners. Nasca would later bat in Mulvaney to give the Lakers a five-run inning, reducing Cortland's lead to four runs. The Red Dragons would be able to tack on three in the bottom of the inning though, pushing the lead back to seven.

Oswego's final run came in the seventh as Alexis Nasca singled, driving in Klauser.

Mulvaney ended the game batting 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Alexis Nasca would finish with two RBI, batting .500 (2-for-4).

Softball will return to the diamond at noon on Sunday as the team hosts Oneonta. The squad will also be honoring its three seniors for Senior Day.
