POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team used an offensive explosion to sweep the host Potsdam in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. It was the final conference games for the squad, which now sits at 5-19 overall and 3-15 in the SUNYAC while the Bears fall to 0-18, 5-26. Oswego will return to action at 3:30 p.m. when it travels to Rochester, N.Y. to face the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in the season finale.
GAME ONE – OSWEGO 14, POTSDAM 1 (5 INN):
Oswego came out hot in the first game, scoring seven runs before the Bears took an at-bat. The Lakers followed that with a four-run second inning before finalizing its mercy-rule victory with three more tallies in the fifth frame.
Five Laker hitters finished with two hits apiece, led by
Melissa Mulvaney and
Lisa O'Callaghan's identical outings of 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored each. Also with two base-knocks were
Dana Taglioni,
Tori Trovato and
Ashley Lyman. Meanwhile,
Katie Heselden and
Alexis Nasca both finished with a hit and two RBI while
Amanda Pfitscher had a hit and a walk.
O'Callaghan earned her fourth win of the season in the circle, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out two.
GAME TWO – OSWEGO 12, POTSDAM 6:
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead, Oswego found itself trailing when Potsdam scored four-straight runs. The Bears held three-run leads twice in the contest but
Ashley Lyman took over late. Oswego battled back to take a 6-5 lead after a four-run top of the fourth, but Potsdam answered back with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame to knot the game back up. Lyman had other plans, reciprocating with an empty-bases jack of her own, which proved to be the game-winning tally.
The sophomore was not finished, however, adding another homer on the day, this time a three-run deposit into the stands during the Lakers' five-run final frame.
Joining Lyman with a multiple-hit game was
Jacquie Porreca, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. The remaining seven Laker hits were registered one apiece by Nasca, O'Callaghan, Mulvaney, Pfitscher,
Alexandria Connelly,
Justine Abramowski and
Sam Scott. Of that group, Scott drove in two runs while Mulvaney, Pftischer and Abramowski each had one.
Jessie Terrano also had an RBI in the contest.
Nasca notched her first win of the season in a relief effort, throwing more than four innings of three-hit ball. The junior struck out two, gave up just one run and walked zero Potsdam hitters.
