FREDONIA, N.Y. – A last minute goal from
Audrey Burbidge secured the win for the Oswego State women's soccer team as it defeated Grove City College 3-2 in the first game of the Fredonia Tournament on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Lakers record to 3-1 on the season, while simultaneously handing Grove City its first loss (2-1-1).
The winning strike came with only 44 seconds remaining in the game as Oswego was awarded a free kick right outside the 18-yard box. Burbidge took the shot, which beat Grove City's keeper and all but wrapped up the win for the Lakers.
All the rest of the games scoring took place in the first half, beginning with an own goal allowed by Oswego just 28 seconds in.
Bailey Waterbury buried an unassisted goal for the Lakers just 2:34 later, notching the game at one apiece. The Wolverines would strike again though, beating keeper
Melissa Siegfried at the 3:31 mark. The final score of the half came from
Emma Geyer, who linked up on a thru ball from
Nicolette Larosa. Geyer was able to collect the pass and the beat the goalie low and to the left side.
Siegfried played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lakers, recording four total saves.
Women's soccer returns to the pitch at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday as the team takes on Penn State Behrend in the final game of the Fredonia Tournament. There will be an admission fee that will be donated towards Roswell Cancer Institute's Team Cure, which has supplied organizers with pamphlets and other literature to help promote cancer awareness. Admission will be as follows: $5 for adults, $3 for children, and $1 for students showing a valid identification card.
