OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oswego State men's basketball team dropped an overtime contest, 77-67, to Brockport on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Lakers to 8-3 on the year and 1-3 in conference games. The Golden Eagles improve to 7-4 and 2-2.
As the clock wound down below 30 seconds,
Brian Sortino raced up the court, into the lane and missed a layup. A perfect carom put the ball back in the junior's hands and he was able to sink the put back. The bucket gave Oswego a one-point lead and after a made free throw by
Kyle Covley, the Lakers led by two with just under two seconds remaining.
What followed was a miracle shot by Brockport, which traveled from the far end of the court through the rafters before bouncing off the hoop and being tipped back in, tying it up at 65. Using the momentum from the remarkable shot, the Golden Eagles raced to victory in overtime.
Four Lakers scored in double-digits on the evening. Sortino paced the team with 18 points and eight boards in 40 minutes.
Kyle Covley and
Walter Sampson each came away with 11 points and combined to collect five boards.
Dustin Pond added 13 points with five coming off of free throws. He tallied three steals and five boards while
Alex Rawa patrolled the glass, reeling in nine of his own. The Lakers were the superior team down low as they won the rebound battle and scored 18 points on second-chance opportunities.
Oswego will face two conference foes this weekend as they host the Plattsburgh Cardinals and Potsdam Bears at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
