Women's Soccer Earns a Point with Double OT Tie

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's soccer team picked up a crucial point in the conference standings with a 0-0 double overtime tie with Geneseo at Laker Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. Oswego (6-4-4, 3-3-2) now was 11 points and is in sixth place in the SUNYAC standings. Geneseo falls to 6-2-5, 4-1-2 on the year, which is good for fourth place with 14 points.

In a fairly even game that included just seven shots-on-goal, the final minute of double overtime provided the most thrilling action of the contest. Inside of the 110th minute, Hannah Almy received a pass a few yards outside the top of the box. Almy controlled the ball and kept her defender on her right hip as she dribbled into the box. As the freshman attempted a shot, the Geneseo defender tripped Almy from behind, drawing the referees whistle for a foul. Oswego was awarded a penalty-kick opportunity with 48.9 seconds showing on the clock.

Junior Sarah Grupp was called upon in the pressure situation and she tried to rocket a shot dead center, just under the crossbar. Knights' keeper Emily Janiszewski leapt straight into the air, getting barely enough hand on the ball to change its flight, ricocheting off the crossbar and back into play. Geneseo would punt the ball out of bounds on the end line, giving the Lakers a corner but the chance went for naught.

Oswego outshot the Knights 4-3 on-target with Geneseo holding the slight edge in overall shots 13-11. Both teams took three corners on the afternoon.

Melissa Siegfried made all three of the Lakers' saves in net on Saturday.

Oswego will now wait until 1 p.m. on Saturday to play its final conference competition of the year against Cortland at home, which will certainly have pertinent playoff implications.
