CLINTON, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team fell short in the Hamilton College Tournament to the host Continentals, 78-70. Hamilton snaps Oswego's four-game winning streak, improving to 4-1, while the Lakers are now 4-2.
It was a tale of two halves on the hardwood throughout the championship game, similar to the Lakers' opening round contest. Oswego began the more aggressive team, nailing more than a majority of its shots taken. From the field, the Lakers were 18-of-30 (60%) and even buried nearly 54 percent of their attempts from behind the arc (7-of-13).
Ian Schupp sparked the early offense after
Brian Sortino sank the first basket of the game from downtown. The junior scored the following 10 points for the good over the course of the contest's first six minutes.
The 15-minute mid-game hiatus caused trouble for the cruising Lakers as they were not the same team post-halftime. Oswego struggled to hit shots and turned over the rock nine times as opposed to five in the first stanza.
Nonetheless, despite falling out of rhythm, the Lakers fought and hung tough. Sortino tallied 14 of his 26 points in the second, including a huge 3-pointer, which cut the Continental lead to just five late in the second. He also cleared three rebounds and an assist to add to his one and five in the first half, respectively. The Fairport, N.Y. native joined fellow guard Schupp on the All-Tournament team.
Other double-digit scoring was done by big-man
Mykelle Krecko, who recorded 10 points on 4-of-6 (67%) shooting, despite seeing his double-double streak end. The Peekskill, N.Y. native grabbed six rebounds, ceding the glass duties to classmate
Keith Tyson, who finished with 10.
Men's basketball will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday to host conference-rival Cortland at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
