CANTON, N.Y. – A
Mitchell Herlihey goal with less than a minute left in regulation gave the Oswego State men's ice hockey team the 3-2 victory over SUNY Canton Friday night at the Roos House. With the win, Oswego improves to 11-9-2 while the Kangaroos drop to 5-16-3. The Lakers also clinched a spot in the SUNYAC Championship due to a Brockport win over the Fredonia Blue Devils tonight.
With the clock winding down and the score knotted at 2-2, it looked as the overtime was inevitable. That's when
Mitchell Herlihey received a pass from
Andrew Barton and backhanded it over the goalies glove into the back of the net with just 58 ticks left. The score would hold, giving the Lakers their 11th win of the season.
Oswego's other two goals came courtesy of the offensive special teams. As Canton was down a player,
Alex Botten took a faceoff deep in the 'Roos zone. He won the draw back to
Matt Galati who quickly clapped it into the back of the net at the 6:23 mark. Later, in the second period,
Shawn Hulshof notched his 10th of the year on the power play. He took a pass from Galati and beat the Canton netminder to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers dominated the game, putting 33 shots on net compared to just five by their opponent. Oswego also held the edge at the face off dot, winning 27 of the 49 puck drops.
Men's ice hockey will complete the home-and-home series with Canton at 7 p.m. on Saturday as they host the 'Roos at the Marano Campus Center for Senior Day.
