Lakers Earn Sweep On Day 1 Of Marlin Invite

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Oswego State baseball team started out the 2016 season with two wins in the first day of the Marlin Invitational hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College. The Lakers defeated the host Marlins 7-4 in their first game before taking down Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 7-0.

Oswego 7, Virginia Wesleyan 4

The Lakers sprinted out of the box in their very first contest of the year by scoring four runs in the opening three frames.  John Barnes got the action going with an RBI-double in the second inning, which scored Jordan Giller from first. On the very next at-bat, Mike Dellicarri singled to drive in Barnes. After nabbing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch, the freshman scored on Robert Donnelly's sacrifice fly to put the Lakers in front 3-0.

Oswego continued to score in the following innings with one crossing home in the third in the form of Eric Hamilton after Zach Kollar ripped a single. In the fourth, Dellicarri and Wes Randall scored on an error after each stole second. This extended the lead to 6-0.The Lakers would get an insurance run in the eighth inning as Barnes made his way around the horn after knocking an infield single.

Tim Cronin earned his first win of the season after allowing just two runs on six hits. The junior also retired six Marlin batters via the strikeout. Andrew Morano took on the relief duties, registering three innings and allowing one earned run before handing the ball off to Andy Stuart who earned the three-out save.

Oswego 7, RPI 0

In the Lakers second game, Oswego found its bats late in the contest, scoring all seven of their runs after the sixth inning.

Randall opened up the scoring for Oswego, as he batted a single to left field that scored both Thompon and Donnelly in the top of the seventh.  Kutscher earned the next RBI as he singled up the middle in the eighth. Barnes, who was on second at the time, was able to score on an over throw, doubling up the Laker lead. Kutscher would be driven in later on in the inning on a Capobianco single.

Oswego's final three runs came in the final inning starting with a B. Hamilton single to left that allowed Thompson to reach the plate and Randall to move to third. The very next batter was E. Hamilton who singled into right, sending Randall home. With no one out, Giller grounded into a double play that allowed B. Hamilton to cross the plate.

Miles Kelly manned the mound for the first seven innings, pitching a five hit shutout that included seven strikeouts. He was then relieved by Cody LaFlamme who continued to hold RPI scoreless for the final two

The baseball team will pick up action at 9 a.m. on Saturday with a game against RPI again. The squad will then finish the tournament with another bout with Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. the same day.
