OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State wrestling team fell 42-0 to No. 6 Cortland at Lee Hall Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The loss puts Oswego's individual meet record at 4-11 on the season while the Red Dragons improve to 12-2.
Although Oswego didn't earn any team points, a few Lakers found themselves in tight battles with their Cortland opponents.
James Ronca was up in his match at the 133-pound weight class, before he turned what the referee called a reversal. The ref waived it off though and Ronca went from winning 3-2 to falling 4-1.
Troy Seymour also battled valiantly at the 174-pound weight class, but fell 2-0 Cortland's Lou Puca who is ranked fourth in the nation.
In the 197-pound bout, No. 10
Daniel Smith faced off against No. 4 Joe Giaramita in what seemed like a dead-even match. Giaramita was called for stalling twice, giving Smith a point. Smith was then taken down but earned a point with an escape to even it back up. The match would result in a 3-3 tie after three rounds meaning it was to go into a sudden death extra round. Here, Giaramita sealed his victory with a take down in the dwindling seconds.
Wrestling will return to action at 12 p.m. on Feb. 14 for the Weslyan Tri-Match in Middletown, Conn.
