CLERMONT, Fla, - The Oswego State softball team began its 2016 campaign with two games of its Spring Trip Sunday afternoon. The team fell to Williams College 2-0 in game one of the doubleheader, but bounced back with a 13-3 win over University of Wisconsin-Platteville later in the day.
Â
GAME 1:Oswego began the game well against the Ephs, as
Erin Sweeney got to first on a one out walk and then was moved to second on a
Gabriella Vertuccio single. The Lakers couldn't capitalize though as Williams' Mackenzie Murphy sent away the next two batters.
Both teams remained scoreless until the third where the Ephs' scored as Alison Micha tripled to score a runner on second. Williams would tag on its other run of the day on a solo shot in the sixth.
Tori Trovato got a hold of one with two runners in scoring position but the wind pulled it just foul.
Brittney Sears got the start on the rubber, striking out two and only allowing five hits in a complete game.
Â
GAME 2: In the second game of the day, the scoring didn't begin until the fourth as the Pioneers scored three in the bottom of the frame. The scoring only motivated the Lakers though, as they doubled that in the top of the fifth. Trovato led off the inning doubling and then advancing to third on a
Melanie Klauser single.
Claire Hewitt then singled and cleared the bases due to two Pioneer scoring errors.
Melissa Mulvaney then got a piece of the action with a single followed by
Erin Sweeney who got to first on an error and
Sarah McCullough who juiced the bases with a single. Vertuccio batted in Mulvaney after that, keeping the bases loaded in the process. The final two Laker runs of the inning came as Trovato, who started the inning, got to second on an error, scoring both Sweeney and McCullough.
The Lakers then backed up an impressive fifth inning with an even better sixth.
Alexis Nasca and
Ashley Lyman highlighted the inning with a pair of two RBI doubles. With a ten run advantage, the Lakers were able to close out the sixth and win by mercy.
Nasca started in the circle for Oswego, pitching three innings and only allowing one earned run. She was relieved by Connelly who finished out the game, shutting out the Pioneers while collecting three punchouts on the way.
Oswego will resume its Spring Trip action at 9 a.m. on Monday as the team squares off against Western Connecticut State. The game will be followed by a battle with Thomas University.
