Boughton Shines In First Career Start; Gets W

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The No. 19 Oswego State baseball team defeated the Farmingdale State Rams, 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. The Lakers improved to 11-3 on the year, while the Rams dropped to 3-9.

Oswego got the contest going in the slightly less traditional way as Wes Randall, Brian Hamilton and Eric Hamilton all earned walks on 3-1 counts. Following the base on balls, Jordan Giller and Myles Kutscher each grounded out, but were able to get the run home making it 2-0 after one inning of play.

Nathan Boughton manned the bump for seven innings in his first career start. The sophomore faced a hiccup in the third inning, but worked his way out of it allowing a just a single run. In what was his first career win, he added seven strikeouts.

The Lakers went back to work in the fifth inning as Randall walked for the third time in the game. The Syracuse, N.Y. native turned in an impressive performance on the base paths, making the opposing team pay for each base on balls. Randall nabbed second and third on this particular occasion, adding to his total of 10 on the year.

B. Hamilton finished off Randall's turn on the bases by knocking him in after his batted ball got just under the glove of the diving centerfielder. Giller would bring him in as well after he advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Lakers were extremely aggressive in the running lanes as Kutscher, John Barnes, Matt Capobianco and Zach Kollar also nabbed a base along with Randall's three. The team tallied seven taken bases overall.

Cody Laflamme came out of the bullpen to relieve Boughton. Laflamme pitched two innings and did not allow a run to cross the plate while striking out one.

The No. 19 team in the nation will play again on Thursday continuing its run at the RussMatt Invitational with a game at 2:30 p.m. with University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. The game will take place at Mickey Etherton Field (Main) at Lake Myrtle Park.
