AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The No. 19 Oswego State baseball team defeated the No. 24 team in the nation University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 5-2 on Thursday at Mickey Etherton Field at Lake Myrtle Park. Oswego rises to 12-3 on the year while the Pointers fall to 2-6.
UW-Stevens Point got out front first in this one as the ball got away from Oswego to allow a runner to score. Yet, the Lakers led by Brian Hamilton answered back in the third inning. After Wes Randall got on, B. Hamilton found the gap with a double and scored Randall all the way from first to tie it up at one.
In the next at-bat, Eric Hamilton singled to move over his brother and then advanced to second where no one was covering the bag. Jordan Giller drove in B. Hamilton on an RBI-groundout before Myles Kutscher came to the plate. On a 1-1 count, Kutscher obliterated the pitch to left field, soaring it over the scoreboard. After three innings, the Lakers led 4-2.
The score would hold this way for the next five innings as neither team could get anything going.
In the top of the ninth, Oswego earned an insurance run after Zach Kollar bunted to get on. Alex Brown then dropped a sacrifice bunt to move over Kollar. Randall followed this with an absolute beauty of a swing, which dropped the ball just inside the foul line and past the third baseman for a double scoring Kollar.
Robert Donnelly earned the win in his seven-inning start on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed just one earned and struck out five Pointers.
Andrew Morano came in and earned the save over the course of two innings. He did not allow a baserunner.
The Lakers will finish up their Spring Break trip Friday as they take on the Allegheny Gators with a doubleheader at Polk State College. The games (weather permitting) will begin at 10 a.m. and will be seven innings apiece.
