Lakers Leave Buffalo With Another Split

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team split its second doubleheader in a row, this time against Buffalo State on Thursday afternoon. Oswego edged the Bengals 5-4 in game won before falling to them 4-2 in the second contest. With the outcomes, the Lakers go to 10-8 overall and remain at .500 (4-4) in the conference. Fredonia moves to 5-9 on the year (1-1 SUNYAC).

GAME 1:

Tori Trovato got the Lakers started right from the get-go, leading off the game with a double into center field. At the next at-bat, Erin Sweeney would ground one to third and reach on the fielder's choice as Trovato got tagged. Alexis Nasca singled next, putting two on the bag for Jacquie Porreca, who doubled and scored both.

In the second inning, the Lakers increased their lead beginning with an Ashley Lyman single to start the inning. She was moved to second on a Katie Heselden sacrifice bunt and then to third as Sarah McCullough grounded out to second. Trovato was able to finally plate Lyman with a single down the right field line.

Up 3-0 Buffalo State recorded a run of its own, but Oswego had an answer as Lyman singled in Sweeney in the following frame. The Bengals would counter that with a three-run inning themselves in the fifth, knotting it up a 4-4. The Lakers were able to secure the game-winning run in the sixth though, thanks to a Sweeney single to center that scored McCullough from second.

Brittney Sears manned the rubber for the complete game, only allowing six hits through seven innings.

GAME 2:

The first inning held a majority of the action for both teams as the squads combined for five runs of the game's six runs. Oswego kicked off the scoring as Sweeny got walked with two outs. Nasca followed the walk with a single to left field that allowed Sweeney to cross the dish from first. The Bengals fought back quickly though, putting up all four of their runs in the bottom of the side.

Oswego put up another run in the top of the fourth as Porreca drove in Heselden with a double, but the Lakers were unable to execute the full comeback.

Softball will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts the Cortland Red Dragons who are currently receiving votes in the national pole.
