Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 5 Oswego Wins PathFinder Title 4-1 Over Utica

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated the Utica College Pioneers – 4-1—in the championship game of the 11th Annual PathFinder Bank Oswego State Hockey Classic. Oswego is now 12-3 on the year, while the Pioneers fall to 10-5.

After trailing for the majority of the first and second periods, Joey Davies notched the game-tying goal and sparked the Oswego comeback. At the 6:00 mark, Davies sniped a shot from the far side of the ice past the goalie's glove side to tie the contest a 1-1.

The Lakers continued to build momentum throughout the end of the middle stanza, firing several shots on goal and eventually tallying 12 for the period. Early in the third, Shawn Hulshof slapped the eventual game-winning goal with assists coming from Matt Galati and Davies. Seven minutes later, Galati added another point to his day with an insurance tally, while Davies notched his third point with a helper.

Both teams started off the game aggressively, but it was the Pioneers that capitalized first. After Hulshof was sent to the box just 2:40 into the contest for interference, Jarrod Fitzpatrick found the back of the net.

Despite the early let down, the Lakers energy continued to build as they mounted shot after shot on goal. Just minutes after the Utica goal, Oswego got a chance to tie it, but just missed sending it off the right post.

In the second period, Oswego was forced to kill off three power play opportunities, including a 3-on-5 situation as both Alex Botten and Davies were sent to the penalty box simultaneously.

Cameron Berry completed the Laker scoring with an empty net goal as the buzzer sounded. It was his first goal of the season and second of his career. David Jacobson earned the win in goal and tallied 25 saves.

The All-Tournament team consisted of MVP Joey Davies (Oswego), Stephen Johnson (Oswego), David Jacobson (Oswego) and Vince Stefan (Utica). From the consolation game, which was won by University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 4-3 over Curry College were David Henry (UW-Eau Claire) and Tyler Vankleef (Curry).

Men's ice hockey returns to action on the road at 7 p.m. on Friday for a nonconference battle with the Nazareth Golden Flyers.
