FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team continued to trend upwards with its third-straight victory 63-62 at Fredonia on Saturday in Steele Hall. Oswego ended the game on a 16-5 spurt to claim the victory over the postseason-bound Blue Devils to keep its own playoff hopes alive. The Lakers improve to 8-14 on the season and 5-10 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia goes to 16-7, 10-6.
Trailing by 10 points with less than five minutes remaining in regulation,
Alison Nunziato nailed a jumper with 4:56 on the clock, spurring the Lakers' 16-5 run to capture the triumph.
Heather Hebert and
Zana Dillard hit back-to-back layups followed by another Nunziato jumper to pull to within one point. After a Blue Devil layup,
Courtney Ameele knocked in four-straight points followed by a Hebert layup for a 63-59 advantage. Fredonia would hit a late 3-pointer but the Lakers held the home team at bay for the win.
Fredonia came out of the gate hot, scoring the contest's first 10 points while holding Oswego scoreless for over four minutes. Oswego would answer the call in the final 5:57 of the first quarter, narrowing the margin to just two points at 14-12. With
Heather Hebert's two points to open the second quarter, the Lakers completed a 10-0 run of its own to knot the game at 14-14.
The two teams traded blows back-and-forth for the rest of the first half, with Oswego heading to the break with a 26-25 edge. Fredonia seemed to seize control of the game in the third quarter by advancing its lead back to double-digits multiple times in the final 10 minutes.
Four Lakers ended with double-figure scoring, paced by
Mary Mazzella's 17 points. Ameele finished with 11 points while Nunziato and Hebert each scored 10. Hebert missed a double-double by just one board, corralling a team-high nine, while Nunziato had the second-most with seven. In all, Oswego had eight of nine players who saw court action grab a rebound in the tilt, helping them to a split of the rebounding category (38-38).
The Lakers will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as they stay out in Western New York to face conference-foe Buffalo State.
