BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team battled to a tough 65-63 loss at Buffalo State on Saturday evening in the Sports Arena. Oswego drops to 8-15 overall and 5-11 in the conference while Buffalo State improves to 7-17, 4-13.
In the first quarter, Buffalo State had advantages in the early portions before the Lakers gained a lead with 1:07 to play. Oswego held onto the advantage throughout the second quarter, possessing a 28-23 lead at the break. The Lakers grew its lead to as many as eight at the beginning of the second half but the Bengals erased that margin with less than three minutes to play in the third quarter. Buffalo State then advanced its control to as many as 13 points before the ebbs and flows continued. Over the next 8:10 of the fourth quarter, Oswego outscored the home team 22-9 to knot the game at 63-63. The Bengals called a timeout with six seconds to play and were able to execute a play that resulted in a layup with just two seconds remaining to escape the Laker comeback bid.
Three Lakers finished in double-figures, led by
Courtney Ameele's 17 points. The junior's final three points were from beyond the arc to tie the game at 63-63 with 12 seconds left in regulation.
Alison Nunziato missed a double-double by just two rebounds, collecting a team-high eight boards to go along with 12 points. The senior continued to fill the stat sheet, recording team-highs for assists (4) and blocks (2). Rounding out the trio was
Heather Hebert, notching 15 points in the outing.
As a team, Oswego turned the Bengals over 20 times resulting in 20 points. The Lakers also had slight edges in points in the paint (24-22) and second-chance points (7-2).
Oswego will conclude its regular season with a pair of conference games next weekend, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Geneseo.
