CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State wrestling team split a pair of duals at the Cortland Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. Oswego opened the day with a 53-0 shutout of Hunter College before falling 39-6 to the host and nationally-ranked Red Dragons. With the split, Oswego stands at 6-10 in duals on the year.
 
Oswego dominated the Hawks in the early dual, recording three pins, two major decisions and a decision in the victory. Matt Stallone started the Lakers out on the right foot with a pin at 2:25 in the 125-pound weight class. After Oswego earned 12 points with two forfeits from Hunter at 133 and 141, Nick Swanson earned a pin. The 149-pounder downed his counterpart in less than two minutes (1:49). Two weight classes later, 165-pound Jeff Lombardi registered the Lakers' third and final pin of the day even more quickly than Swanson. Lombardi needed just 1:27 to record his triumph.
 
Vincent Darpino and Sean Maloney accounted for the squad's major decisions back-to-back after Lombardi's pin. Darpino trumped Nick Brutus in the 174-pound weight class 10-2 before Maloney tallied a 12-3 win at 184.

The closest bout of the match came at 157 between Oswego's Rocco Russo and Hunter's William Heine. Tied at 4-4 after the first, Russo earned an escape in the second to draw a 5-4 advantage with one period remaining. The transfer-freshman then scored a near-fall early in the third to go up 7-4. Heine escaped for a point later in the period to create the 7-5 final.
 
The Lakers were able to take two decisions for six points in the loss to No. 17 Cortland. At 149-pounds, Joey Bush trailed 5-4 entering the third period and rode out Matt Caputo whole final period to give himself exactly one minute of riding time for the point to force overtime. In the first sudden victory OT, Bush recorded a takedown and near fall for the 9-5 win. In the final weight class of the day, Kade Andrews used a waning-moments take down to capture a 3-1 victory. The opponents traded one-point escapes in the second and third periods before Andrews scored the takedown with just 19 seconds left.
 
Oswego will now travel to the NCAA Mideast Regionals – hosted by York College in York, Pa. – which are slated to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.
