OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team used a big opening quarter to down Potsdam 71-42 on Friday evening. Oswego improves to 6-14 and 3-10 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears fall to 2-17 and 1-13 in the conference.
Oswego started this game on a 7-0 run on baskets from four different Lakers and never looked back.
Courtney Ameele,
Heather Hebert and
Alison Nunziato each scored a basket, while
Rachael Windhausen knocked down a free throw.
The Lakers continued to play aggressive through the opening quarter, opening a 19-6 advantage. They went on to win each of the following three quarters, never taking their collective foot off of the gas. Oswego's lead reached as much as 32 in the fourth period.
All five starting Lakers recorded double-digits points on the night. Nunziato (12), Ameele (11), Mazzella (11), Windhausen (11) and Hebert (13) scored 58 of Oswego's 71 points on the evening. Windhausen also reeled in 10 boards to tally a double-double.
Three other players also notched at least one point led by
Zana Dillard, who scored seven and pulled down eight boards.
Sarah Feminella and
Quincey Zimmerman added three apiece, while the latter added 10 rebounds.
Although there was no lack of scoring on the evening, no points seemed to be more important than the 101
st and 102
nd tallies. Hebert drove from outside the lane to the middle and laid the ball perfectly into the hoop to score her 12
th and 13
th points on the evening, which earned her career point number 1,000.
Women's basketball returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday for a Senior Day matchup with the Plattsburgh Cardinals.
