OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team defeated Plattsburgh 51-39 on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon. Oswego improves to 7-14 on the year and more importantly earns a win in the conference (4-10). Plattsburgh falls to 9-12 and 5-10 in the SUNYAC.
For the second-straight game, the Lakers came out on fire and built up a lead throughout the first quarter, which it would not relinquish.
Following Senior Day festivities,
Rachael Windhausen got Oswego on the board early with an easy layup. Seniors
Mary Mazzella and
Alison Nunziato followed this up with back-to-back 3-pointers for extend the Laker lead to 8-3.
Through the middle periods, the Lakers offense slowed up a bit, but their defense was strong enough to counter.
Heather Hebert contributed 10 points through the first half and an all-important four in the penultimate period when Plattsburgh started to change the momentum.
Meanwhile, the Lakers started off the fourth period on an 11-1 run to keep the Cardinals at bay and eventually secure the victory. Plattsburgh mustered just 22.2 percent shooting from the field against a stingy Laker defense. Oswego forced 12 mishaps from the Cardinals, which ultimately led to 11 points.
Hebert led all scorers with 22 points and added 12 rebounds for a final regular season home game double-double. Fellow seniors Mazzella (10), Nunziato (3) and
Allie Izzo (2) tallied 15 points.
Oswego will return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday for more league action on the road against the Fredonia Blue Devils.
