AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 16 Oswego State baseball team hopped back into the win column with a 4-0 shutout victory over the University of Massachusetts at Boston Beacons on Wednesday afternoon. Oswego improves to 9-4 on the year, while the Beacons fall to 4-2.
In a solid pitcher's duel, it was Oswego that was able to snag runs when it mattered. The Lakers scored once in the first and fourth innings, before adding a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.
In the first inning, following a pair of quick outs,
Eric Hamilton began a late rally. The senior infielder earned a full-count walk, before snagging second base uncontested. The clean-up hitter,
John Barnes, followed up Hamilton's time with an RBI-single up the middle to drive in Hamilton.
Myles Kutscher led off the fourth inning by ripping a double down the left-field line.
Josh Hoagland added an infield single to move Kutscher to third and then
Alex Brown finished the job with a sacrifice fly to center.
Late in the game, Oswego was able to add a pair of insurance tallies. After loading the bases, Simmons poked a ball down the left-field line, which nicked the third basemen's glove and slipped by to drive in
Zach Whelan and
Kyle Dinges.
Bobby Zywicki dazzled on the mound for the Lakers and dealt 5.2 innings, tossing less than 70 pitches. He allowed six hits, surrendering zero earned runs and ringing up three batters to earn the win (1-0).
Robert Donnelly entered in a bases-loaded situation in the sixth and collected a major strikeout, freezing the batter on the inside of the plate with a fastball. He continued to pitch out the contest, going 3.1 innings and striking out three in the combined shutout. Donnelly collected the save for his second of the year.
Baseball returns to action at 12:30 p.m. on Friday for conference-opening action against Fredonia. The Lakers will play a doubleheader with the Blue Devils at Chain of Lakes Park in the Stadium.
